WINDHOEK, April 12 — Namibia’s oldest competitive cycling race, the Nedbank Cycle Challenge, has been postponed to February 2025.
The initial decision to delay the race in February was prompted by the passing of former Namibian President Hage Geingob and the subsequent period of national mourning, Nedbank’s spokesperson Selma Kaulinge confirmed on Thursday.
“We were hopeful of rescheduling the race for April 21. However, the increasing logistical demands of our commitment to the extensive array of sponsored cycling races, including national and international races hosted locally, coupled with the commencement of our other logistics-heavy sponsorship properties, compromised our intent to host a peerless Nedbank Cycle Challenge quite significantly,” she said.
According to Kaulinge, efforts are underway to ensure a smooth process for refunding participants who had previously registered for the challenge.
Dubbed ‘the greatest ride under the sun,’ the Nedbank Cycle Challenge is one of the oldest sporting events in the country. Since its debut in 1986, the race has grown in popularity among cycling fanatics and multitudes of cyclists race each year.
Cyclists can take part in 20km, 30km, 60km or 100km categories in the event.
