Windhoek, Nov 6– Namibia and Finland are set to celebrate the legacy of former Finnish President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari on 10 November 2026, recognizing his historic contribution to Namibia’s independence and promoting dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution and reconciliation among young people.
The celebration, organised by the Embassy of Finland in Windhoek, in partnership with CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation and Martti Ahtisaari Primary School, will take place at Martti Ahtisaari Primary School in Wanaheda, Katutura, Windhoek.
The event will bring together representatives of government ministries, members of the diplomatic corps, educators, development partners and other distinguished guests to reflect on Ahtisaari’s contribution to Namibia and the importance of building peaceful and inclusive societies.
Ahtisaari played a significant role in Namibia’s journey to independence, serving as the United Nations Commissioner for Namibia and later as the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, overseeing the United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG).
His leadership contributed to the successful implementation of the UN-supervised transition that culminated in Namibia attaining independence on 21 March 1990.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to international peace and conflict resolution, Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.
Beyond honouring his historical contribution, this year’s celebration places particular emphasis on equipping young people with practical skills in dialogue, negotiation, mediation and peaceful conflict resolution.
According to Aino Niskala, Project Manager at CMI – Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation, Ahtisaari Days were established on the understanding that peaceful conflict resolution is a skill that can be learned and practised in everyday life.
She explained that the initiative originated from an idea introduced by Finland’s President Alexander Stubb during his tenure as Foreign Minister and was later embraced by President Ahtisaari.
Since its establishment in 2011, Ahtisaari Days have developed from an annual awareness-raising event into a broader educational programme aimed at helping learners apply dialogue and conflict resolution skills in their daily interactions.
Niskala described the first Ahtisaari Day celebration in Namibia as particularly meaningful, given the country’s central place in the former Finnish President’s life and peacebuilding work.
The initiative seeks to encourage learners to appreciate dialogue not only as a means of resolving disagreements but also as an important tool for strengthening communities and promoting mutual understanding.
The celebration also recognises the role of Martti Ahtisaari Primary School, which was renamed in 1997 in honour of his contribution to Namibia’s independence.
Located in Katutura, the school represents an enduring connection between Namibia and Finland and provides an opportunity to pass Ahtisaari’s values of peace, understanding and reconciliation to future generations.
For young Namibians, the celebration offers an important reminder that peacebuilding is not exclusively the responsibility of political leaders and diplomats. It begins in classrooms, families, schools and communities through respect, active listening, tolerance and the willingness to understand different perspectives.
As Namibia continues to strengthen its commitment to national unity, social cohesion and youth participation, initiatives such as Ahtisaari Days provide an opportunity to integrate peace education into the everyday experiences of young people.
Ultimately, Ahtisaari’s legacy demonstrates that sustainable peace requires more than political agreements. It demands continuous efforts by individuals and communities to resolve differences constructively and create societies where everyone has an opportunity to contribute.
