Fanaties
Antiques, secrets and stories from times gone by come to life in kykNET’s brand-newdocumentary series Fanaties, which premieres on Tuesday 5 November at 20:00. The series, which consists of eight episodes, follows the passionate and charismatic Natie Ferreira into his world of antiques, collectors and history, uncovering the people and stories behind the treasures that keep our past alive.
In Fanaties, it’s not just about what something is worth, but about who and what history hides behind it. Natie discovers valuable, forgotten and sometimes unusual pieces. The true worth of these finds, however, lies in the stories he encounters along the way. From visits to collectors and experts to the busy day-to-day happenings in his shop – Die Sinkhuisie in Riviera, Pretoria – each episode offers a unique glimpse into a world where dust, cobwebs and memories meet.
“The opportunity to share my stories and those of fellow collectors with viewers was incredibly exciting,” says the presenter of the series, Natie Ferreira. “I hope to inspire people to fall in love with antiques; to spark the interest of new collectors and to show
that behind every item lies a story and a piece of history. It’s important to me to celebrate the rich heritage of our country and its people.”
Fanaties takes viewers on a nostalgic yet surprisingly exciting journey into the world of collecting, restoration and history. “I think Fanaties has something for everyone,” says the producer, Elmi De Pauw, of Walla Films. “You’ll be amazed by the people and their
stories – and maybe even discover that something in your own cupboard might be worth more than you think.”
- Fanaties premieres Tuesday 5 November at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel 144) and will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up. Som van twee
At the 2024 Silwerskerm Festival, Som van twee was the big winner, taking home seven Silwerskerm Awards, including Best Script, Best Directing and Best Feature Film. On 8 November, this much-lauded film makes its debut on kykNET.
Som van twee tells the story of Henk Opperman, a psychologist who confesses at his wife Nicolene’s funeral that he had leaked their matric mathematics exam paper. When the education department gets wind of this story and decides that the entire class of 1990 must rewrite the exam, Henk asks his son, Renier, to tutor him, but it doesn’t go well. The father-son relationship has always been strained and volatile. Henk’s father, Gert, also interferes constantly, and it isn’t long before things get out of hand.
The role of Henk is played by Louw Venter, and James Borthwick is Gert. James won the Silwerskerm Award for Best Actor, and Pierre Breytenbach, who appears as Petrus, was named Best Supporting Actor. The role of Renier is portrayed by Adriaan Havenga. Also in the cast are Greteli de Swardt, Righard van Jaarsveld, Reginald Hufkie, Deon Coetzee, Leandie du Randt and Kim Cloete.
Som van twee is Simoné Pretorius’s debut as a feature film director, and she won two Silverskerm Awards for the movie – one for Best Director and another for the screenplay.
Dries Scholtz’s editing and the soundtrack by Snoozefest and Hunter Kennedy also took home awards in their respective categories.
“It hard to believe, but Som van twee is based on a true event,” says Simoné. “Liani Jansen van Rensburg came across an article and told me about it. A woman in theNetherlands, Melissa Kelderhoff, admitted during a school reunion that she had seen her
final biology exam paper beforehand. The story reached the Minister of Education, Culture and Science, who decided that the entire 1992 matric class in the country had to rewrite their biology exam.” For Simoné, the casting was key. “We looked for actors who were strong in both drama and comedy, especially for Louw and James’s characters. Louw brought a lot of colour
to his character. That charisma wasn’t something I could write – Louw embodied it. And James is surely one of the most talented actors I’ve ever worked with. It’s incredible to witness his sense of humour and dedication.”
- Som van twee airs Saturday 8 November at 20:00 on kykNET (DStv channel144) and will also be available on DStv Stream and Catch Up.
