President Advocate Duma Boko today led the nation in celebrating the Golden Jubilee of the Bank of Botswana, a milestone that reflects not only 50 years of economic stewardship but also the resilience and vision of the country.
Addressing dignitaries and citizens gathered for the occasion, President Boko described the anniversary as a moment of national pride and reflection. โThis milestone is not only about looking back at what we have achieved,โ he said, โbut also about imagining the future we want to build for Botswana.โ
Since its establishment on July 1, 1975, the Bank has stood at the heart of the economy, entrusted with protecting the integrity of the national currency, the Pula and Thebe, which were first introduced on August 23, 1976.
Through decades of change, the Bank has provided stability, guiding the nation through shifting global and regional economic currents.
President Boko praised the Bankโs role in maintaining modest inflation, safeguarding peopleโs incomes, and creating an environment where businesses can thrive. He also highlighted how financial stability has opened doors for Batswana enabling families to save, borrow, invest, and insure against risks, while ensuring government projects reach communities across the nation.
The Golden Jubilee was not only a reflection on history but also a celebration of progress. To mark the occasion, the Bank unveiled a commemorative P50 note, honoring both its 50 years of service and Botswanaโs Olympic gold medalist, Letsile Tebogo.
President Boko remarked that the note symbolizes not only economic strength but also national pride and inspiration for future generations
