Zambia, Zimbabwe sign deal to boost medical product regulation

LUSAKA, June 19– Zambia and Zimbabwe have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing cooperation in the regulation of medical products between the two countries, according to a statement released on Tuesday. The MoU, signed between the Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) and the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ), establishes a strategic partnership to strengthen regulatory functions. Key areas of cooperation include the detection of substandard and falsified medicines, the implementation of track-and-trace systems, and the application of nanotechnology and biotechnology in the production of medicines, vaccines, and active pharmaceutical ingredients. The agreement is effective for five years and can be renewed with mutual consent. According to the statement, the MoU underscores a shared commitment to advancing public health, fostering innovation, and ensuring access to safe, high-quality, and effective medical products for citizens of both countries. “It establishes a robust framework for technical cooperation, including information sharing, capacity building, joint participation in international fora, mutual recognition of Good Manufacturing Practice inspections, and fostering investment by pharmaceutical industries across both countries,” the statement said. ZAMRA Director-General Makomani Siyanga said the partnership reflects the countries’ joint commitment to ensuring that only safe, effective, and quality-assured medical products are accessible in their markets. He added that the deal represents a proactive step toward harmonization, efficiency, and innovation in regulatory systems. MCAZ Director-General Richard Rukwata described the MoU as a significant milestone in regional regulatory convergence. He noted that the two agencies will leverage each other’s expertise and resources to strengthen the fight against substandard and falsified medical products.
