Tribute to a Resilient Mother of the Namibian Liberation: Honoring Kuku Petra Nakwenye Aluvilu Ameya

Her Excellency Dr. Cde. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the SWAPO Party and of the Republic of Namibia, delivered a heartfelt address on the occasion of the memorial service for the late Kuku Petra Nakwenye Aluvilu Ameya, held on 14 November 2025 in the Omusati Region.

At the age of 91, Kuku Petra passed away on 31 October 2025, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond her family. As a devoted Christian and a pillar of strength, she was a true citizen whose life was deeply intertwined with the history of Namibia’s liberation. Her home near the Okapalelona border post was not just a residence but a strategic sanctuary for the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) fighters during the anti-apartheid struggle. She offered food, comfort, prayers, and invaluable information, embodying the spirit of selflessness that sustained Namibia’s fight for independence.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah emphasized Kuku Petra’s role as part of the mighty army of women whose sacrifices ensured that future generations could live in peace and dignity. Though she never bore arms, her unwavering commitment and sacrifices were instrumental in Namibia’s freedom. Her life after independence, living 35 years in a free Namibia, remains a testament to the impact of her dedication.

The memorial also celebrated her values of faith, humility, family loyalty, and community service. These principles guided her life and continue to inspire those who knew her. The President acknowledged Kuku Petra’s daughter, Comrade Sophia Shaningwa, Secretary General of the SWAPO Party, as a living reflection of her mother’s strength and commitment to the nation.

The service concluded with heartfelt condolences extended to the bereaved family, with a prayer that Kuku Petra be received in eternal peace by the Almighty God she so faithfully served.

Her legacy endures not only in her family but also in the hearts of all Namibians who cherish freedom and peace.
