Minister of Information and Communication Technology Emma Theofelus has urged Namibians to embrace information and communication technology (ICT) as a catalyst for job creation, economic growth and poverty reduction, particularly among young people.
Speaking at the 9th National ICT Summit at the Ongwediva Trade Fair Centre on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, Theofelus stressed that Namibia’s digital transformation must create tangible opportunities for all citizens and ensure that no community is left behind.
She highlighted government initiatives, including Project 1000, DigiNam and the National Emergency Telecommunications Plan for 2025–2030, as key interventions supporting the country’s digital development agenda. The initiatives form part of broader efforts to expand digital opportunities and strengthen the role of technology in national development.
The summit, held outside Windhoek for the first time, marked a significant step towards promoting inclusive digital development across the country. Speaking on behalf of the Oshana Regional Governor, Okatana Constituency Councillor Shigwedha Ashipala emphasised the importance of extending digital transformation to all regions and communities.
Guest speaker Dr Mbangula Lameck Amugongo encouraged young Namibians to advocate for supportive legislation that enables them to develop innovative, technology-driven solutions to challenges affecting their communities.
Running until 16 October 2026, the summit brings together government officials, policymakers, innovators, entrepreneurs, academics, private-sector representatives and development partners to explore how ICT can drive inclusive economic growth, expand opportunities and improve the lives of Namibians.
