DAR ES SALAAM, June 14 — Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed Judge George Mcheche Masaju as the new chief justice of the East African country, succeeding Ibrahim Hamis Juma, who has retired after serving more than seven years as head of the judiciary. The appointment was confirmed in an official statement released Friday by Chief Secretary Moses Kusiluka. According to the statement, Judge Masaju will be sworn in on June 15 by Hassan at the Chamwino State House in the capital, Dodoma. Masaju has held several key positions within Tanzania’s legal system. Most recently, he was appointed by the president to serve on the Court of Appeal.
