Tanzania pledges to eliminate obstetric fistula by 2030

DAR ES SALAAM, May 23 — Tanzanian authorities on Friday reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating obstetric fistula by joining the world in observing the International Day to End Obstetric Fistula. Speaking during a commemoration event, Mbeya Regional Commissioner Juma Homera emphasized that obstetric fistula — a severe childbirth injury caused by prolonged, obstructed labor — remains prevalent in Tanzania. The condition leaves women incontinent, often leading to social stigma and isolation. Homera called on all stakeholders to intensify efforts and implement strategic plans to eliminate the condition nationwide by 2030. “Current data shows that of the estimated 2,500 to 3,000 new fistula cases reported annually in Tanzania, only around 1,500 women receive treatment,” he said. He noted that many women suffering from obstetric fistula remain untreated due to stigma, lack of awareness, or limited access to medical services. “As a nation, we must remain vigilant and united. Health is a fundamental right for every woman, and together, we can build a future free from fistula,” Homera added. The International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, observed annually on May 23, aims to raise awareness and galvanize global action to end the condition.
