Windhoek, June 8 – The family of the late sixth and former President of Zambia Edgar Lungu has declined a request from government of Zambia to accord the former president a state funeral citing mistreatment from the current administration. The family of late President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has announced plans to repatriate his remains from South Africa privately, citing mistrust and mistreatment by the current government. The decision comes after the government expressed interest in participating in the funeral arrangements, but the family wants to honor President Lungu’s personal wishes.The family has decided to manage the repatriation process independently, respecting President Lungu’s desire to be buried in Zambia with dignity. Aileges that President Lungu was mistreated by the current government, including being denied requests to travel abroad for medical attention.The family spokesperson, Makebi Zulu, has called for national unity during the mourning period, urging the government to respect the family’s wishes.
The former president’s health condition worsened in 2025, and doctors advised urgent evacuation to South Africa. Government had expressed interest in participating in ceremonial arrangements, but the family has declined, citing a desire to honor President Lungu’s personal wishes.
