Windhoek, May 27 — The Namibian nation will tomorrow mark the Inaugural of the Genocide Remembrance Day a national observance day dedicated to honouring the memory of the victims of the 1904-1908 Genocide perpetrated against the Ovaherero and Nama communities during the German colonial rule in Namibia. A candlelight and a minute of silent to pay tribute to those killed during the Genocide will form part of the ceremony.
In 2024, President Nangolo Mbumba declared 28 May a national public holiday in accordance with the public holidays Act,1990 ( Act No.26 of 1990), to honour those who lost their lives and to reaffirm the nation’s collective commitment to remembrance. The day was declared a public holiday with effect from 28 May 2025.
