WINDHOEK, July 28 – Namibia has secured a major breakthrough in agricultural trade following the signing of a phytosanitary agreement that will allow the export of fresh table grapes to China.
The agreement on the phytosanitary requirements for the export of fresh table grapes from Namibia to China was signed between Namibia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform and China’s General Administration of Customs during the recent State Visit of Namibian President Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to China.
The agreement establishes the plant health and quarantine standards required for Namibian table grapes to enter the Chinese market, creating new export opportunities for Namibia’s horticultural sector and strengthening agricultural trade between the two countries.
In another significant development, China announced a unified regional market access arrangement for the import of wild aquatic products from Africa. The new arrangement gives Namibia the green light to export eligible wild aquatic products to the Chinese market, opening additional opportunities for the country’s fisheries sector.
These developments are expected to boost Namibia’s agricultural and fisheries exports, diversify export markets, and strengthen bilateral economic cooperation between Namibia and China while contributing to job creation, increased foreign exchange earnings, and sustainable economic growth. The news was confirmed by Chinese Ambassador to Namibia His Excellency Zhao Weiping during a press briefing on President Dr. President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s state visit to China earlier this month.
