Namibia opens maritime museum to preserve history, boost economy

WINDHOEK, Sept. 18 — Namibia has officially opened the Namibia Maritime Museum in the coastal town of Luderitz, showcasing the country’s rich maritime history and the economic importance of its marine resources. Speaking at the grand opening on Wednesday, President Nangolo Mbumba highlighted the museum’s role in preserving Namibia‘s maritime heritage and promoting sustainability. “The Namibia Maritime Museum will play an integral role in properly capturing, documenting, and representing Namibia‘s maritime heritage and the contribution our people have made to global seafaring,” Mbumba said.

He emphasized the ocean’s significance to Namibia‘s economy, noting that the coastline has long supported trade, exploration, and cultural exchange. “Our ocean is of integral importance to us as a nation, not only from a historical standpoint but also as a means of advancing our developmental objectives,” he said. Housed in the historic Luderitz Old Power Station, built in 1911, the museum will feature maritime artifacts, vessels, and educational exhibits about Namibia‘s relationship with the Atlantic Ocean. The museum aims to educate visitors on sustainable practices and the role of marine resources in the country’s development, Mbumba said, calling on Namibians to support the museum and preserve their maritime history for future generations. The museum is expected to boost tourism in Luderitz, drawing both local and international visitors interested in Namibia‘s maritime history and sustainable ocean management.
