NAIROBI, June 23 — Kenya on Monday secured a 126.8-million-U.S.-dollar concessional loan from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to finance a new program aimed at improving rural livelihoods and protecting natural resources. National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, who signed the agreement for the Integrated Natural Resources Management Program (INReMP) in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, said the program will address the urgent challenges of environmental degradation, climate change, and declining rural livelihoods. Mbadi said in a statement that the loan features blended terms, including a 1.41 percent interest rate, a 1.39 percent service charge, a 25-year repayment period, and a five-year grace period. “This program is not just about conserving the environment — it’s about securing the livelihoods of our rural communities, restoring their natural resources, and building resilience for future generations,” Mbadi said. He said INReMP will be implemented in 10 counties, focusing on sustainable resource management, strengthening rural institutions, and improving household incomes through environmentally friendly livelihood activities. IFAD Regional Director Sara Mbago-Bhunu reaffirmed the fund’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s efforts to tackle rural poverty, promote food security, and build climate resilience.
