In a compelling keynote address delivered at the Hackathon Fundraiser held at Windhoek Sky Restaurant on August 14, 2025, Hon. Emma Theofelus, Minister of Information and Communication Technology, outlined a bold vision for Namibia’s digital future. Charged with the mandate to spearhead the nation’s efforts in leveraging technology for economic growth and societal advancement, Minister Theofelus emphasized the critical role of digital transformation in public service delivery and overall national development.
A week prior, Namibia launched a comprehensive Digital Strategy designed to integrate cutting edge technologies across multiple sectors. The objective is clear to develop digital skills, foster innovation, and enhance government services to create a more efficient, transparent, and inclusive society. Central to this initiative is the upcoming Mega Hackathon scheduled for October 15, 2025, which will serve as a dynamic platform for innovators, students, and graduates to devise practical digital solutions addressing national challenges.
Minister Theofelus passionately described the Hackathon Fundraiser as the vital first step in mobilizing resources and enthusiasm for this event. The initiative aims to empower Namibia’s youth by giving them the opportunity to create technology driven solutions that simplify citizen access to essential services and promote inclusive innovation. “The time for Youth led digital transformation is now!” she declared, highlighting the importance of young Namibians as today’s change makers, not just future leaders.
The government’s commitment to digitalization was stressed as foundational for an enabling environment where private sector modernization can truly flourish. The Minister pointed out the inefficiencies hindering progress, such as manual processing of permits, which impede business-government interfaces and compliance. A digital government, she noted, can unlock tremendous national value but requires overcoming challenges like fear of technology and resistance to change a process the Mega Hackathon hopes to accelerate by showcasing tangible digital solutions.
Furthermore, the Hackathon represents a call for collaboration among captains of industry, ICT professionals, and government officials. Minister Theofelus urged all stakeholders to contribute resources and support to this noble initiative, promising an open door pledge system to facilitate contributions.
In closing, Minister Theofelus painted an inspiring vision of walking “hand in hand, into the era of a truly digital government,” affirming that by nurturing young talent and collective effort, Namibia can achieve what once seemed impossible ushering in a new age of transparency, efficiency, and inclusion through digital innovation. The Mega Hackathon stands as a beacon of hope and progress, signaling Namibia’s readiness to transform governance and societal interactions for the betterment of all.
