Windhoek, Oct 16 — The City of Windhoek is implementing a programme that aims to transform selected municipal electrical infrastructure, including pillar boxes, stubbies, distribution station buildings and other suitable installations, into vibrant public artworks that enhance the city’s visual appeal while celebrating its cultural heritage, community identity and creative diversity.
The City hereby invites local visual artists to submit original design proposals as part of the Powering Windhoek Through Art: Public Art Programme. Through this initiative, the City seeks to create attractive and inclusive public spaces, promote
local artistic talent, strengthen civic pride and contribute to urban beautification, tourism and placemaking.
The city encourages artists from diverse backgrounds and artistic disciplines who are over 18 years of age to submit site-specific designs that reflect the identity, history, environment, and aspirations of Windhoek, inspired by the theme, “Powering Windhoek Through Art”.
Applications closes on 16 November 2026. Further guidelines and application details are available in the official Call for Artists notice.
The City of Windhoek looks forward to partnering with the local creative community to transform ordinary public infrastructure into extraordinary expressions of art that inspire residents and visitors alike.
The success of this programme depends not only on the creativity of our local artists but also on the support and stewardship of the communities in which the artworks are located. The City therefore seeks resident’s cooperation in ensuring that artis are able to work on their local infrastructure and to ensure that their work remains safe and free from vandalism.
The City of Windhoek looks forward to collaborating with local artists and communities to transform everyday municipal infrastructure into meaningful artistic landmarks that reflect the spirit of Windhoek.
