GABORONE, Sept. 23 — Botswana is set to be hot during the 2024/2025 agricultural season, with weather experts predicting “above normal temperatures,” a senior government official said Monday. “Temperatures are predicted to be above normal throughout the season countrywide,” said Boatametse Modukanele, permanent secretary in the Botswanan Ministry of Environment and Tourism, when addressing farmers in the city of Francistown, east Botswana. The temperatures are expected to range between 36 degrees Celsius and 45 degrees Celsius over the entire country. According to Modukanele, the 2024 rainfall season will have a slow start and below-normal rainfall during October and progress to above-normal rainfall for the period November 2024 to March 2025. Meanwhile, a weak La Nina weather phenomenon is favored throughout the forecast period. The La Nina typically produces wetter seasons over the southern African country, but the influence of each event varies, particularly in conjunction with other climate influences, Modukanele said.
