South African professor sworn in as new ICJ judge

CAPE TOWN, Feb. 7– South African Professor Dire Tladi was sworn in Tuesday as a new judge of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), reported SAnews, the official news agency of South Africa. Tladi is the first South African to be a permanent judge at the ICJ. According to the news outlet, the ICJ held a public sitting Tuesday morning, in The Hague, the Netherlands, where Tladi and three other new judges were officially sworn in after being elected by the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council on Nov. 9, 2023. The other new members of the court include Bogdan-Lucian Aurescu from Romania, Sarah Hull Cleveland from the United States and Juan Manuel Gomez Robledo Verduzco from Mexico. Their nine-year tenure of office began on the same day. On his appointment as a judge of the ICJ, he was a professor of international law at the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
