by Olatunji Saliu ABUJA, Feb. 7- As the Super Eagles of Nigeria continue their impressive performance at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by Cote d’Ivoire, anticipation is high among Nigerians, both domestically and internationally, for the team’s semifinal match against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana on Wednesday. The semifinal match between Nigeria and South Africa, scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m. local time on Wednesday, will take place in the city of Bouake, at the Stade de la Paix for one of the two footballing giants to book a place in the AFCON final on Feb. 11. Nigeria secured its semifinal spot by defeating Angola 1-0 in Abidjan, while South Africa moved forward after overcoming Cape Verde on penalties. “The Super Eagles have been exceptional in this tournament, and I have no doubt they will continue to shine in the semifinals,” Emmanuel Itoro, a football enthusiast from Nigeria’s oil-rich Delta state, told Xinhua. “And everyone is rallying behind the team. It is a great feeling to see our country competing at this level.” Bouake holds historical significance for Nigeria, having been the site of their victorious semifinal match against Egypt in 1984, which ended in an 8-7 penalty shootout win after a 2-2 draw. This historical context fuels optimism among fans, with social media buzzing with support for the Super Eagles. Social media platforms are abuzz with messages of encouragement for the Super Eagles, with fans sharing their optimism for a victorious outcome. “It is noteworthy and incredible to think that Nigeria is back in Bouake for a semifinal clash, just like in 1984. I believe history will repeat itself, and the Super Eagles will emerge victorious once again,” Suzan Yakubu, a long-time supporter of the Nigerian national team, said in a post on Facebook. Standing in their path is a formidable South African side known for its competitive spirit and tactical prowess. The clash between Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana promises to be a fierce battle on the pitch. The journeys of both the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana so far in the ongoing tournament have been nothing short of impressive, with standout performances that have captured the imagination of football fans across the continent. While Nigeria boasts of a star-studded team with a watertight defense that has been breached only once in five matches played so far, the South Africans are expected to be a hard nut to crack on Wednesday, having continued to prove critics wrong with their highly impressive performance and daring to win the AFCON title again, after years in the doldrums. FIFA ranks Nigeria 42nd globally and sixth in Africa, compared to South Africa’s 66th worldwide and 12th on the continent. More interestingly, both teams are in the same qualifying group for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. “The entire country is behind the Super Eagles. We are all united in our support for the team, and I am confident that they will make us proud,” said Sesan Adedotun, a fan following the tournament from his base in Nigeria’s southwestern state of Lagos.
He said the Nigerian team, although a low-scoring side with only six goals so far in the competition, had shown “great skill and determination on the field.” Nigeria and South Africa have clashed 14 times at the international level. The AFCON game on Wednesday will be the 15th clash between Nigeria and South Africa at full international level. Nigeria has won seven of these previous matches, while South Africa has won two, with a total of five matches drawn. With the stage set for a thrilling showdown, all eyes will be on Bouake as the national teams of the two countries lock horns again in what promises to be a memorable semifinal clash at AFCON. “Forget past encounters; this match will be a true test of character for the Super Eagles. South Africa is a tough opponent, but I have faith in the Super Eagles to come out on top,” Adedotun added.
