HARARE, Aug. 16 — Zimbabwe is making bold strides toward industrial independence, thanks to the Chinese-invested Dinson Iron and Steel Company (DISCO). Speaking during a recent media tour, Minister of Information Jenfan Muswere praised the steel plant as a key success under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s leadership, highlighting its role in cutting steel imports and boosting local production.
“After decades of spending billions on imported steel, Dinson’s arrival means Zimbabwe is now producing steel at home,” Muswere said. The plant, recently awarded Special Economic Zone status and key permits by the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency, is set to drive mineral beneficiation, increase job opportunities, and fuel economic growth.
Xu Kemin, CEO of Dinson Group, said the SEZ certification is pivotal for unlocking Zimbabwe’s industrial potential. He emphasized that DISCO will serve as the anchor project within the industrial park, encouraging further investment and transforming the zone into a vibrant economic hub.
A subsidiary of China’s Tsingshan Holding Group, DISCO began building the steel plant in Midlands Province in 2022 with the goal of positioning Zimbabwe as a regional steel powerhouse. This development marks a significant milestone in the country’s quest for industrial sovereignty and economic progress.
