Madagascar Takes Helm of SADC at Landmark 45th Summit in Antananarivo

The 45th Ordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Heads of State and Government is currently unfolding at the IVATO Conference Centre in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Under the theme “Advancing Industrialisation, Agricultural Transformation, and Energy Transition for a Resilient SADC,” this summit marks a significant turning point for the regional bloc.

His Excellency Mr. Andry Rajoelina, President of Madagascar, was elected Chairperson of SADC, succeeding President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe. In his acceptance speech, President Rajoelina emphasized the need for solidarity and shared responsibility to accelerate economic resilience, regional stability, and sustainable development across Southern Africa.

A historic highlight of the summit was the first-time attendance and addresses from four newly elected leaders:

• Advocate Duma Boko (Botswana)

• President Daniel Chapo (Mozambique)

• President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah (Namibia)

• Prime Minister Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam (Mauritius)

These leaders committed to strengthening regional cooperation, consolidating peace, and driving industrialisation and inclusive economic growth signaling renewed energy and vision within SADC.

Beyond leadership transitions, the summit will tackle critical issues such as peace and security, climate resilience, food security, and the energy transition. The goal to lay stronger foundations for a resilient and prosperous Southern African region.

Madagascar’s new chairmanship heralds a fresh chapter of unity and progress for SADC as it charts a course toward transformative development and regional integration.
