3,000 households affected by rainfall in South Africa’s Cape Town

CAPE TOWN, June 28 — The City of Cape Town, South Africa’s legislative capital, has confirmed that nearly 3,000 households have been affected by the recent heavy rains, which have triggered widespread flooding across the metro. Meanwhile, over 7,000 residents in vulnerable communities have required humanitarian assistance in the wake of the downpours, which are expected to persist until Saturday night, according to a statement issued Friday by the City’s Disaster Risk Management Center (DRMC). In the statement, DRMC spokesperson Charlotte Powell said that “assessments continue, but to date, just under 3,000 households have experienced some weather-related impacts.” She said that the South African Weather Service has issued a yellow level 1 Warning for further disruptive rainfall in the southwestern parts of the Western Cape, where Cape Town is located, on Friday and Saturday. “The forecast could result in localized flooding but also exacerbate existing impacts from the previous frontal system earlier this week, as the soil and waterways in many parts of the city are saturated,” said Powell. “City services will continue to monitor for and address any weather-related impacts, like issuing flood kits, restoring electrical faults, unblocking roadways, and providing milling, sand, and sandbags to affected communities,” she added.
