Zambia completes construction of space data receiving station

LUSAKA, Oct. 11 — Zambia has completed the construction of its ground receiving station of data from space, which has already started receiving data from space, a senior government official said Friday. Minister of Technology and Science Felix Mutati said the facility, built at 14 million U.S. dollars, was fully operational and receiving data from space. He said when he toured the facility situated in central Zambia’s Chibombo District that tests had already been conducted successfully by experts, according to a statement. The ground-receiving station will be crucial in helping policymakers and other experts plan for interventions in various sectors. “The amount of data we are already receiving from space is amazing. It is making our experts from UNZA (University of Zambia) and CBU (Copperbelt University) analyze and help us make informed decisions,” he said. The minister, however, said Zambia would not focus on sending its satellite into space but would push for access to data from countries that already have satellites in orbit. According to him, accessing data from space is crucial in finding solutions to the country’s many challenges. The government, he said, is focused on using technology to advance development in the country.
