UN envoy stresses importance of engaging Libya’s security institutions for peaceful elections

TRIPOLI, Sept. 7 — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily on Thursday stressed the importance of engaging various security institutions in order to hold peaceful elections in Libya. Bathily made the remarks in a meeting with Libyan Interior Minister Emad al-Tarabelsi in the capital Tripoli, during which they discussed the country’s security situation and efforts to preserve stability, the UN official wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled due to disagreements over election laws among the Libyan parties. Last week, Bathily and Speaker of the eastern-based House of Representatives Aguila Saleh stressed the need for a unified government to facilitate general elections in the country. Ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime in 2011, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid escalating violence and political division.
