UK foreign secretary calls for “immediate ceasefire” in Middle East

LONDON, Aug. 25 — British Foreign Secretary David Lammy said on Sunday that further escalation in the Middle East “must be avoided at all costs” following a heavy exchange of fire between Israel and Lebanon. On social media platform X, Lammy said he called Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and reiterated “the importance of restraint, the need for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and the release of all hostages.” Also on Sunday, British Defense Secretary John Healey said on X that he had spoken to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, underlining “the importance of agreeing a ceasefire in Gaza.” “De-escalation across the Middle East is crucial,” Healey wrote. Israeli and Hezbollah forces engaged in extensive exchanges of fire early Sunday morning along the Israel-Lebanon border, marking a significant escalation in their longstanding conflict. Due to the escalating situation in the region, British Airways has announced the suspension of flights to and from Israel’s Tel Aviv until Wednesday.
