KAMPALA, July 20 — Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has held talks with his South African counterpart Cyril Ramaphosa over the ongoing xenophobic violence and anti-migrant protests in South Africa, calling for decisive action to address attacks on African migrants.
According to a State House statement issued Sunday, Museveni told Ramaphosa that xenophobic attacks targeting African migrants pose a danger to the continent. “I urged him (Ramaphosa) to deal decisively with xenophobia because welcoming fellow Africans is the right thing to do,” Museveni said while addressing more than 1,000 Ugandans who recently returned home after fleeing the violence. “If countries begin retaliating against one another, it will be dangerous for the entire continent,” he said, adding that South Africa should never forget the support it received from other African countries during the struggle against apartheid. Noting that illegal migration should be handled through appropriate legal and administrative measures rather than violence, he urged Ugandans not to direct their anger toward South Africans living or investing in the East African country.
