Thunderstorms claim 6 lives in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG, Oct. 25 — Six people were killed in thunderstorms Sunday, plus the destruction of more than 600 houses and extensive damages to the infrastructure in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal Province, said Nomusa Dube-Ncube, premier of the province, Tuesday. KwaZulu-Natal, a coastal province in east South Africa, received plenty of heavy rains characterized by strong winds Sunday night, with thunderstorms damaging homes, schools and roads, Dube-Ncube said. Among those who died was a one-year-old child who succumbed to death when the structure collapsed due to heavy rains and strong winds, Dube-Ncube said, who declared that the damage is “substantial” and they are still assessing it. “As the province, our budget alone will not suffice to cover the cost of this devastation. We are actively devising plans to assist all those affected. We are engaging the national government requesting support as we face this disaster,” the premier said.
