ACCRA, Sept. 30– Ghana’s senior men’s national football team, the Black Stars, suffered a 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in their second Group C match of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.
Having lost its opening qualifier against Cote d’Ivoire last week, Ghana was eager to pick up all three points. The home side was awarded a penalty after Ghanaian defender Jerome Opoku was fouled in the Gambian half. Ernest Nuamah converted to give Ghana the lead in the 27th minute. Six minutes later, Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the Black Stars’ advantage. The Gambia, however, responded with two goals in the 37th and 42nd minutes through Muhammed Badamosi and captain Omar Colley to make it 2-2 at halftime.
After the break, Ghana continued to dominate possession, but the visitor kept its composure and took the lead through Ebrima Colley in the 68th minute. Colley added his second of the night and The Gambia’s fourth to seal a 4-2 victory. After two rounds, Cote d’Ivoire and The Gambia are level at six points while Somalia is third. Ghana remains at the bottom of the group. Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON and has yet to earn a point after two matches in the ongoing qualifiers.
