Tanzanians celebrates 60 years of union between Tanganyika, Zanzibar

DAR ES SALAAM, April 28– Tanzanians braved a heavy morning downpour on Friday to celebrate six decades of the union between Tanganyika and Zanzibar, which formed the United Republic of Tanzania on April 26, 1964.
They were joined by leaders from Kenya, Burundi, Namibia, Comoro, Somalia, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as representatives from Uganda, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Mozambique at the Uhuru stadium in the port city of Dar es Salaam, where President Samia Suluhu Hassan inspected a grand parade mounted by the armed forces.
In her brief address, Hassan urged fellow citizens to continue honoring and nurturing the union, saying that it has made Tanzanians feel proud and united.
“Tanzanians should feel proud of the union that has stood the test of time. The union has also played a major role in boosting cultural, social, and economic development,” said Hassan.
Tanzania’s Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi urged Tanzanians to continue strengthening the union for the benefit of current and future generations.
