DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 22 — Tanzanian Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba on Friday ordered the acceleration of construction of training grounds for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), urging contractors to work around the clock where necessary to ensure their timely completion.
Nchemba issued the directive after inspecting construction progress at training grounds in Dar es Salaam, which are among the facilities being prepared for the continental tournament to be jointly hosted by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. He said AFCON 2027 should not be viewed solely as a sporting event, but also as a major economic opportunity for Tanzania. The prime minister also directed authorities to address workers’ complaints over employment contracts, overtime payments and other benefits. According to project officials, construction of the Farasi training ground has reached 74 percent and is expected to surpass 80 percent by the end of August. The facility will include changing rooms, officials’ and medical rooms, and a modern drainage system. Leaders Club will also have a stand accommodating about 2,500 spectators. AFCON 2027 will be the 36th edition of Africa’s premier men’s football tournament and will be hosted jointly by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda, marking the first time the three East African countries will stage the competition together.
