Tanzania urges African nations to boost infrastructure for continental integration

DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 5 — Tanzania on Sunday called on African countries to accelerate the integration of transport, energy and digital infrastructure to facilitate trade, strengthen value chains and build a more resilient continental economy.

According to a statement issued by the communications unit of the Vice President’s Office, Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi made the call while addressing the eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting between the African Union, the Regional Economic Communities and the Regional Mechanisms in El Alamein, Egypt, on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Ndejembi said that recent economic disruptions had exposed challenges to Africa’s integration and highlighted the need to accelerate industrialization, strengthen regional value chains and boost intra-African trade. He noted that Tanzania was improving transport infrastructure, logistics services and payment systems while upgrading the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, constructing the standard gauge railway linking Tanzania with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and improving ports and air transport infrastructure. Furthermore, the East African nation is developing power transmission projects to link the East African Power Pool with the Southern African Power Pool, as well as joint electricity projects with Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda.
