Tanzania moves to reform poultry sector for economic growth

DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 16– Tanzanian authorities on Wednesday reaffirmed their commitment to reforming the poultry sector to enhance economic development and improve citizens’ welfare. During the opening of the two-day Southern African Poultry Futures Forum in the port city of Dar es Salaam, Deputy Prime Minister Doto Biteko highlighted that Tanzania, with a chicken population of 103.1 million, has significant potential to transform its poultry industry into a lucrative sector. “The poultry sector stands to contribute immensely to the country’s economic development and improve people’s welfare,” Biteko told delegates from 23 African countries. He instructed the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries to establish modern poultry demonstration farms, laboratories, and abattoirs to bolster the industry. He also called on the ministry to attract investors in chicken feed production to reduce reliance on imports. The forum gathered leaders from sectoral ministries across the Southern African Development Community, a regional bloc, and beyond, along with experts from government and non-governmental organizations, private sector representatives, development partners, and stakeholders throughout the poultry value chain.
