SWAPO Condemns US Blockade on Cuba Ahead of UN Vote, Calls for Solidarity and Immediate Lift of Embargo

Windhoek, October 29 — As the United Nations General Assembly prepares to vote on the long-standing US trade embargo against Cuba, the SWAPO Party stands firmly in solidarity with the people and government of the Republic of Cuba. The party denounces the unilateral sanctions and economic blockade imposed by the United States, calling them illegal and unjust.

For over six decades, the US has maintained a cruel blockade, inflicting immense suffering on the Cuban people by strangling its economy and denying access to essential food, medicine, and resources. SWAPO highlights that this policy violates international law and the UN Charter.

In response to recent false claims by the US Ambassador at the UN denying the blockade’s existence and blaming Cuba’s government for its hardships while accusing Cuba of destabilizing activities SWAPO stresses these allegations are attempts to obscure the truth. The embargo is an act of economic warfare that punishes Cuba and third countries engaging with it, exacerbating shortages in healthcare and agriculture sectors.

SWAPO calls on all nations to reaffirm their commitment to sovereignty, non-interference, and multilateralism by voting in favor of condemning the blockade. The party urges the US to lift the embargo immediately and pursue genuine dialogue grounded in mutual respect.

Reaffirming its historic solidarity with Cuba rooted in shared struggles for independence SWAPO pledges to continue advocating for an end to the embargo, recognizing Cuba’s significant contributions to global solidarity, including medical support to Namibia during its liberation.

The forthcoming UN vote is a crucial opportunity for the international community to stand united against economic aggression and uphold principles of justice and cooperation.
