Somalia security forces intercept bomb-making chemicals

MOGADISHU, June 13 — Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said it had seized a large cache of explosive chemicals allegedly destined for al-Shabaab militants in the country’s southern region.

NISA announced the seizure on Thursday evening following a targeted security operation in the Lower Shabelle region. The agency said al-Shabaab militants had buried more than 100 containers of the chemicals in the Jilib Marka area after learning that security forces were tracking their movements. The operation dismantled terrorist logistical networks, disrupted supply chains, and neutralized materials intended for planned attacks, NISA said. “This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle al-Shabaab’s terror network, particularly targeting the supplies and equipment used in terrorist attacks,” NISA said in a statement.

The latest operation came as the government intensified a multi-pronged offensive across the country.
