President Dr Nangolo Mbumba Congratulates President, Adv. Duma Gideon Boko and the Umbrella for Democratic Change Following their Electoral Victory during the 30 October 2024 General Elections in Botswana

Windhoek, Nov 2 –The Republic of Botswana held general elections on 30 October 2024 where Adv. Duma Boko and the Umbrella for Democratic Change emerged victorious. Yesterday, Friday 1 November, the Independent Electoral Commission announced that the UDC had reached the threshold of 31 seats, which is enough to form a Government.

In its preliminary statement on 1 November 2024, the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) observed that the political and security environment during the elections was calm before and after voting. Moreover, the Mission concluded that the 2024 General Elections in the Republic of Botswana, ā€œwere conducted in a peaceful and orderly manner where the Batswana people exercised their democratic right to vote.ā€ Similarly, the African Union Electoral Observation Mission (AUEOM) arrived at the same conclusion.

In his message of felicitations, President Nangolo Mbumba says:

ā€œI wish to congratulate the President Adv. Duma Boko and the Umbrella for Democratic Change on their brilliant election to lead the Republic of Botswana following the 30 October 2024 General Elections. I equally commend my dear brother President Mokgweetsi Masisi for promptly accepting the will of the people and by committing to prepare an orderly and peaceful transition. The Batswana deserve our collective praise for the peaceful general elections.

The ties between Namibia and Botswana were forged during the fight for independence, where many Namibians found shelter in their reliable neighbour during the war against German colonialism and Apartheid occupation. Today, bilateral relations between Namibia and Botswana are characterized by stronger trade, commercial and people to people exchanges.

As President Adv. Buko undertakes the important task of forming and steering a new Government, I look forward to a continued fruitful working relationship and strengthening of our bilateral relations for the shared prosperity of our two nations.ā€
