WINDHOEK, March 1 — Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), a state-owned enterprise mandated to run the tourism facilities within the country, on Wednesday unveiled an initiative program to encourage locals to explore the wonders of their homeland by offering substantial discounts on accommodation across all establishments. This initiative, titled “Independence Special,” comes in response to concerns among Namibians about the expenses associated with domestic travel, said Nelson Ashipala, an NWR spokesperson, in a statement. According to Ashipala, starting March 1, all lodges under NWR’s management will be discounted by 60 percent, making it easier for locals to experience the diverse landscapes and unique wildlife that Namibia offers. “Through our recent engagements with the public, we have recognized the genuine concerns regarding the affordability of leisure travel,” Ashipala said, adding that the special is open to all travelers and hoping to see a strong uptake, mostly from locals. Ashipala said as part of the special, popular lodges such as Khorixas Camp in Damara Land will be available for as little as 220 Namibia dollars (about 11 U.S. dollars) per night, including breakfast. “It’s important to note that while most lodges are included in the Special, seasonal camps such as the Miles along the coastline are not part of the discounted offer,” he added. The Independence Special will run throughout March, giving Namibians ample opportunity to take advantage of these exclusive discounts and embark on memorable adventures across the country. According to the 6th Tourism Satellite Account Report 2022, launched in early February, tourism activities accounted for 6.9 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product in 2022, with the tourism sector estimated at 14.3 billion Namibia dollars in monetary terms.
