Windhoek, Jan 20 –Namibia has enacted the marriage Act, 2024 (Act No.14 of 2024 which prohibits the recognition of same-sex marriages in the land of the brave and those concluded outside Namibia. Same-Sex is not legal in Namibia. On 16 May 2023, the Supreme Court ruled 4–1 that same-sex marriages concluded outside of Namibia should be recognized for residency purposes. A bill seeking to overturn the ruling has passed the Parliament of Namibia and awaited President Nangolo Mbumba’s signature. The fourth President of the Republic of Namibia, His Excellence Nangolo Mbumba signed the law last year 2 October 2024 reversing the Namibian supreme court ruling which had recognized same-sex marriage.
The new act means marriage is defined as a union between two people of the opposite sex, no same-sex marriages will be allowed or recognized in Namibia including those concluded abroad.
