Nedbank Namibia Supports Autism Education at NeuroNexus Academy

Windhoek, 28 January— Nedbank Namibia has strengthened inclusive education efforts by supporting NeuroNexus Academy, a specialist school for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), through the donation of classroom furniture and learning equipment valued at N$34 000.

The contribution forms part of the bank’s corporate social investment programme and aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on inclusive and quality education, and SDG 10, which focuses on reducing inequalities, including those affecting persons with disabilities.

The support comes amid growing concern over the limited capacity of special needs education in Namibia. Recent reports indicate that hundreds of children remain on waiting lists due to space constraints at specialised institutions, which often require smaller teacher-to-learner ratios and tailored learning environments to adequately support learners with additional needs.

NeuroNexus Academy, which opened its doors in January 2025, was established to address a critical gap in the country’s education system by providing education exclusively for children with ASD. The school places strong emphasis on early intervention and individualised education plans, noting that while autism is not curable, appropriate and timely intervention can significantly improve developmental outcomes.

Founder of NeuroNexus Academy, Elsje Fowler, said the demand for specialised autism education in Namibia remains high. “The need in Namibia is immense, and we feel honoured to offer this service to the Namibian community,” Fowler said. She described the academy as a progressive institution that values each child as an individual, with a focus on safety, happiness and personal development.

Fowler explained that the school aims to help learners develop essential life, social, communication, and motor skills, while also creating opportunities for children to explore their interests and reach their academic potential where possible. She added that NeuroNexus Academy also seeks to serve as a centre of information and awareness on autism and neurodivergent conditions, promoting inclusivity and understanding within society.

Nedbank Namibia Chief Financial Officer Victor Maengahama said the bank remains committed to addressing barriers that prevent families from accessing quality education. “Quality education is only meaningful when learning environments are designed around the needs of each child,” he said.

Maengahama noted that reducing inequality requires practical interventions that enable children to actively participate in learning rather than simply cope within unsuitable systems. He added that Nedbank Namibia’s ethos of being “money experts who do good” guides its support for initiatives that deliver measurable and positive social impact.

He further commended NeuroNexus Academy for creating pathways for learners who require specialised educational support and reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting similar initiatives in the future.
