Windhoek. Aug 12 –In an era defined by climate uncertainty and growing pressure on natural resources, the role of
corporate and community partnerships in safeguarding the environment has never been more critical.
The Nedbank Go Green Fund stands as a notable example of how financial institutions working along side civil society, can move beyond traditional roles and actively shape environmental stewardship and community resilience.
Established in 2001 through a partnership between Nedbank Namibia and the Namibia Nature Foundation, the Go Green Fund has supported initiatives that bridge conservation with community development. Its longevity reflects a sustained financial commitment and a recognition that environmental challenges cannot be addressed through short-term interventions alone. The fund continues to operate within a framework that seeks to ensure responsible allocation of resources
towards initiatives capable of delivering sustainable environmental and community outcomes.
The Go Green Fund awarded N$700 000 to three projects namely: the Khomas Environmental Education Programme (KEEP); //Kharas Region Pilot Carbon Footprint Challenge, and Awareness Raising on Plant Poaching as a Threat to the Succulent Karoo Vegetation Biome; and Capacitating Future Botanists with Botanical Collections and Conservation Skills. These initiatives highlight an approach that intergrates education, behavioural change and scientific capacity-building alongside
conservation.
The selected projects were evaluated based on their environmental relevance, community impact, sustainability potential and implementation capability.
The KEEP programme, implemented by the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF), demonstrates the power of environmental education. With more than 20,000 learners already reached, KEEP underscores a crucial insight: environmental responsibility is most effectively embedded when introduced at a young age.
The //Kharas Region Pilot Carbon Footprint Challenge, and an Awareness Raising on Plant Poaching as a Threat to the Succulent Karoo Vegetation Biome implemented by Omut̯ati Environmental Education and Sustainability Foundation (OEESF) addresses the urgent need for behavioural change in the face of climate pressure. By engaging schools in practical actions such as tree planting, energy conservation and waste management, the project will translate abstract climate concepts into tangible,
localised action.
The Capacitating Future Botanists project, implemented by the National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI), aims to build greater awareness of Namibias rich flora while strengthening local expertise.
Namibia Nature Foundation Director of Prgrammes, Frances Chase, said: ‘We recognise that addressing today’s environmental challenges requires strong partnerships built on a shared vision and long-term commitment. The Nedbank Go Green Fund demonstrates what is possible when the private sector and civil society work together to invest in people and nature.
Nedbank Namibia Chief Financial Officer, Victor Maengahama, remarked: ‘From a broader perspective, initiatives like the Go Green Fund challenge us to rethink the role of corporate institutions in sustainability.
