Namibian President Pledges Stronger Cooperation with Zambia
Windhoek, Aug 27 —Namibian President Her Excellency Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has congratulated Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema on his re-election, following Zambia’s elections held on 13 August 2026.
On behalf of the Government and people of Namibia, President Nandi-Ndaitwah conveyed her congratulations to President Hichilema on receiving a renewed mandate to lead the people of Zambia. She wished him wisdom, strength and success as he continues to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to him by the Zambian people.
The Namibian President stressed that a renewed electoral mandate comes with a profound responsibility to govern in the interests of all citizens, strengthen democratic institutions and safeguard the peace and unity necessary for national progress.
She also commended the people of Zambia for participating in the democratic process and exercising their right to determine the leadership and direction of their country.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah called for the continued strengthening of democratic culture across Africa, emphasising peaceful elections, respect for democratic and legal institutions, and the protection of citizens’ freedoms. She noted that democracy is strengthened not only through elections but also through commitment to the institutions and values that give elections meaning.
The President further highlighted that protecting democracy is a shared responsibility involving governments, political leaders, institutions, political parties and citizens. She urged all stakeholders to ensure that political competition does not undermine national cohesion or the peace required for development and prosperity.
Strengthening Namibia-Zambia Relations
President Nandi-Ndaitwah described the relationship between Namibia and Zambia as one rooted in a shared history and the sacrifices of the liberation struggles of Southern Africa.
The two countries continue to cooperate through regional and continental platforms, including the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union.
Looking ahead, President Nandi-Ndaitwah said she looks forward to working closely with President Hichilema during his renewed mandate to further strengthen bilateral relations between Namibia and Zambia.
Key areas identified for deeper cooperation include trade and investment, infrastructure development, energy, agriculture, transport and logistics, economic development and people-to-people exchanges.
The President also stressed the importance of stronger regional cooperation as Southern Africa continues to face challenges including economic development, unemployment, climate change, peace and security.
She reaffirmed Namibia’s commitment to working with Zambia to promote peace, security, stability, democracy and sustainable development in the region while advancing shared African priorities on the continental and international stage.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed confidence that Zambia would continue contributing to regional integration, peace and security, as well as the economic advancement of Southern Africa and Africa as a whole.
She concluded by wishing President Hichilema, his Government and the people of Zambia continued peace, unity and prosperity, while expressing her hope for continued collaboration between the two sister nations.
