Namibia’s agriculture minister pledges focus on food security, land reform

WINDHOEK, April 9 — Namibia’s newly appointed Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Land Reform Mac Albert Hengari on Wednesday presented a comprehensive vision for the sustainable development of the country’s vital sectors. In his inaugural address to ministry officials on Wednesday, he pledged to prioritize food security, economic diversification, and equitable land reform while emphasizing the importance of collaboration and dedication. “The sectors under our mandate, namely agriculture, fisheries, water, and land, form a backbone of our economy, driving not only food security but also job creation, poverty alleviation, and rural development,” he said, highlighting the fact that over 70 percent of the population relies directly or indirectly on agriculture. His speech also outlined 10 key priority areas for the next five years, such as boosting agricultural output and input availability, improving farm productivity and food security, as well as growing agro-industries for regional economic growth. “It is crucial that we remain steadfast in our commitment to these priorities and ensure to the best of our abilities the implementation of them all,” Hengari said. The minister added that he looks forward to working with his staff to contribute to the sustainable utilization of agricultural, fisheries, water, and land resources.
