Namibian President Challenges Business to put CSI at the heart of National Development

Windhoek, Sep 3 – Her Excellency Dr Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, President of the Republic of Namibia, has urged companies to move beyond symbolic contributions and embrace Corporate Social Investment (CSI) as a genuine commitment to national development stressing that true measure of CSI lies not in the size of donations or public recognition, but in its ability to empower communities, develop skills and create lasting socio-economic opportunities.
In a statement delivered on her behalf by the Director General of the National Planning Commission Ambassador Kaire Mbuende at the first Namibia CSI Mukopano in Windhoek, the President called for stronger business cooperation to drive inclusive development.
“Corporate Namibia must ensure that CSI goes beyond symbolic contributions and becomes a meaningful driver of social and economic transformation.” She emphasized that “while profitable and well-managed businesses remain essential for economic growth, employment creation and national development, companies must also remain conscious of the communities that
contribute to their success”.
“CSI should not be viewed as a public relations exercise or simply a compliance requirement, but rather as a genuine investment in society. True measure of corporate investment is not the size of an announcement or the visibility of a donation, but whether it creates lasting impact by improving education, supporting healthcare, empowering young people, strengthening families
and placing communities on a path towards self-reliance.”But rather emphasized the President, “Corporate Social Investment (CSI) and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) must be used as strategic development instruments that can accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Vision 2030, and Namibia’s National Development Plans”.

Dr. Nandi-Ndaitwah further called for stronger partnerships between Government, businesses and communities to expand opportunities across Namibia, particularly in rural areas. She acknowledged the investments already being made by corporate entities and encouraged the private sector to deepen its role in national development, highlighting that collective efforts are
needed to ensure that economic progress reaches all Namibians.
Speaking on behalf of the Mukopano partners, MTC Chief Brand, Marketing, Communications and Sustainability Officer Tim Ekandjo said: “We have identified seven National CSI priority areas for great impact, namely Youth Employment and Skills development, Education and learners support, Water, Sanitation and Basic Services, Health and Social Wellbeing, Food
Security and Agriculture, Enterprise and Local Economic Development, and Infrastructure and Connectivity.” Ekandjo added, “As CSI Mukopano, our task is now to develop a national CSI Response Action Plan, Identify Priority Projects, mobilize Funding, Build Corporate Participation, implement for impact, and report annually.”

The inaugural Namibia Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Mukopano brings together like-minded stakeholders from government, private sector, civil society, development partners and social impact organizations committed to advancing social impact in Namibia.
