Namibia uses digital technology to preserve cultural heritage

WINDHOEK, Sept. 20– Namibia is turning to digital technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to preserve its rich cultural heritage, an official said on Thursday. Speaking at the launch of TransNamib’s Heritage Week, an event organized by state-owned rail operator TransNamib at the Windhoek railway station during the Namibian Heritage Week, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology Modestus Amutse highlighted the importance of protecting Namibia‘s cultural and historical sites while emphasizing the role of technology in this process. “Digital transformation and AI have made research and data capturing record historic, religious, and cultural information much easier, and we must capitalize on it to record our culture as a nation,” Amutse said. The Namibian Heritage Week, observed under the theme “Culture is Community and Community is Culture,” celebrates Namibia‘s diverse heritage and seeks to promote efforts to document and safeguard cultural practices and sites across the country. Amutse said preserving cultural heritage is crucial for both the present and future generations, emphasizing that protecting this legacy is a shared responsibility. “It is our common responsibility to find and preserve our heritage, our culture, and our pride for generations, and the government is ready to do its part to ensure that our cultural diversity is preserved,” he said.
