Windhoek, April 15 — The Namibia Cybersecurity Incident Response Team NAM-CSIRT), which is part of the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN), has been allocated N$20 million to support cyber resilience in the country. Namibia has increasingly become a target for international cybercriminals, largely due to the country’s low levels of cyber awareness and online vigilance among both individuals and businesses.
According to recent statistics, Namibia recorded an alarming 2.7 million cyberattacks within a single year, averaging approximately 7,000 attacks daily. Alarmingly, many victims, whether individuals or organizations, remain unaware and have no means to detect that they have been compromised, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures and education.
In response to these growing threats, the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has reaffirmed its commitment to bolstering national cybersecurity. In a significant development, the Ministry has pledged seed funding of N$20 million to support the sustainability and operational effectiveness of the Namibia Cybersecurity Incident Response Team (NAM-CSIRT).
The announcement was made today in Windhoek by the Minister of ICT, Hon. Emma Theofelus, during the official launch of NAM-CSIRT. Minister Theofelus emphasized that the allocated funds will be used to equip NAM-CSIRT with advanced threat intelligence tools, cutting-edge technology (both software and hardware), and the necessary skilled human resources to ensure timely and effective responses to cyber threats.
This initiative marks a critical step in strengthening Namibia’s cyber defense capabilities and promoting a safer digital environment for all citizens and businesses
