Windhoek, October 16 — Hon. Amb. Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Trade, delivered welcoming remarks at the commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. The event, held under the theme “25 years of 1325: Honouring the Legacy, Advancing the WPS Agenda”, brought together distinguished African leaders, former heads of state, regional and international partners, and prominent peace and gender advocates in Windhoek.

Minister Ashipala-Musavyi extended a warm welcome to esteemed guests, including President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia, Prime Minister Right Hon. Tjitunga Elijah Ngurare, former Presidents Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, Madam Sahle Work-Zewde of Ethiopia, Madam Catherine Samba-Panza of the Central African Republic, former Vice President Pumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka of South Africa, and several other high-level dignitaries and representatives from various organizations.

She described Resolution 1325 as a landmark born from the bravery of African women who fought against slavery and colonialism, noting its profound influence in shaping the discourse on women’s voices in global peace and security since its adoption. Namibia, she highlighted, proudly stands as the cradle of this transformative agenda in Africa, emphasizing the continued responsibility to advance its vision for future generations.

The Minister reflected on Namibia’s historical role and the broader African experience of women increasingly influencing parliamentary governance, diplomacy, peacekeeping, and community leadership, especially in post-conflict settings. She recognised the trailblazing leadership of the distinguished guests present, who exemplify courage and commitment across diverse contexts.

Special tribute was paid to President Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Namibia’s first female President, regarded as a symbol of possibility and progress for gender equality. Minister Ashipala-Musavyi underscored that Namibia’s involvement in the creation of Resolution 1325 was grounded in its own struggle for freedom and dignity, marking the country’s gift of solidarity to the world.

The event reaffirmed the importance of partnerships and shared experiences in navigating dynamic geopolitical times as Namibia pledged continued leadership on the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The Minister acknowledged the indispensable role of male counterparts in enabling women to take their rightful place at decision-making tables.

Visitors to the commemoration were invited to explore Namibia’s Heroes Acre and independence museum, honoring those who contributed to national liberation, alongside enjoying Windhoek’s cultural centers to take a piece of Namibia home with them.

Minister Ashipala-Musavyi concluded her remarks with a heartfelt welcome: “Karibuni sana! Bien venue a tous!” expressing gratitude to all participants for their dedication to advancing peace and gender equality.
