WINDHOEK, March 22 — Namibia’s Ministry of Agriculture Water and Land Reform has embarked on an intensive campaign to encourage farmers in the northeastern Zambezi region to protect their animals against potential diseases. This comes after the ministry dispatched a team of experts in the past few weeks to investigate a high mortality of animals that were affected by various diseases as well as a lack of pastures for grazing. Albertina Shilongo, the Ministry’s chief veterinary officer, said they are encouraging farmers to participate in the government’s ongoing drought relief program as well as report any high numbers of deaths in cattle. “Farmers must practice vaccination for the cattle against common diseases,” Shilongo said in a statement released Wednesday. “Farmers should provide feed supplements for weak cattle during drought periods.”
