Windhoek, October 14 — The Government of the Republic of Namibia expresses deep concern over the recent political developments in the Republic of Madagascar.
In August 2025, leaders of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) gathered in Antananarivo for the 45th Ordinary Summit. During this summit, member states made firm commitments to advance economic integration, industrialisation, agricultural transformation, and energy transition key drivers for improving citizens’ livelihoods. These goals are grounded in the necessity of stable governance, constitutional order, and respect for democratic norms as fundamental enablers of sustainable development.
Notably, President Andry Rajoelina of Madagascar assumed the role of SADC Chairperson starting August 2025, a position that carries significant leadership and moral responsibility within the region.
It is therefore deeply regrettable that recent events in Madagascar contradict the principles reaffirmed by SADC members just months ago. Attempts to seize power through unconstitutional means violate the shared values and obligations among member states. Such actions threaten the integrity of regional agreements, undermine public confidence, and jeopardize the peace and stability essential for regional progress.
Namibia strongly condemns any efforts to subvert constitutional order. We call on all stakeholders in Madagascar, particularly security forces, to exercise restraint, uphold the rule of law, and promote a peaceful, inclusive dialogue that restores democratic governance.
In solidarity with the people of Madagascar during these challenging times, Namibia urges SADC, the African Union, and other regional bodies to intensify mediation efforts and ensure that the commitments made at the August summit are fully respected and implemented.
