Windhoek, February 22 – Mobile Telecommunications Ltd (MTC) has allocated N$450 000 to partner with the City of Windhoek on the Go Green, Skip the Plastic initiative, procuring 4 000 reusable shopping bags and launching an awareness drive to slash single-use plastic reliance.
The campaign aims to foster sustainable habits among residents by distributing the bags at clean-up events across Windhoek’s constituencies, shopping malls, and commercial hubs.
MTC’s Chief Brand, Marketing, Communications and Sustainability Officer, Tim Ekandjo, stressed the need for collective action aligned with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. “For us to safeguard and sustain the environment, it requires behavioural change and concerted efforts from all stakeholders,” Ekandjo said.
He highlighted plastic bags’ environmental dangers and called for action. “We therefore urge all residents to actively participate, reduce littering and take pride in building cleaner and greener communities. Protecting the environment should not be optional; it is essential not only for our collective future, but for generations to come. We must preserve it.”
Ekandjo noted MTC’s broader support, investing over N$1 million in recent years on City of Windhoek clean up efforts, including school campaigns, tree planting, and a waste-sorting pilot in Katutura.
Windhoek Mayor Sakarias Uunona praised MTC’s role and rallied more partners. “We commend MTC. Thank you for walking with us on this shared vision to create a safe and clean city for our people. Your support is exemplary and inspirational. I therefore call on more public and private partners to align with clean city initiatives and join the movement of harnessing and sustaining a safe and clean environment for all,” Uunona said.
