Ministry of Education Officially Mourns the Passing of Ras Sheehama and Jackson Kaujeua Junior

The Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture solemnly joins the nation in mourning the loss of two of Namibia’s most gifted musicians, Ras Sheehama and Jackson Kaujeua Junior.

Ras Sheehama, a legendary figure in Namibian music, profoundly shaped the country’s cultural identity through his unique reggae sound and socially conscious lyrics. Since independence, he has been a powerful voice of resilience, unity, and truth. His timeless songs including Cassinga, Inotila, Travelling, City Young Girl, Poverty, and Nekwa capture the spirit of the liberation struggle, celebrate independence, and reflect the enduring challenges faced by Namibians across generations. For over three decades, his music resonated deeply both at home and internationally, securing his place as a national cultural icon.

Ras Sheehama’s artistry echoed Nina Simone’s belief that the role of the artist is to reflect the times. His music was more than melody; it was a mirror of society, a call for justice, and a celebration of life’s joys and hardships. His musical legacy marked by distinctiveness and brilliance will continue to inspire and comfort future generations. Namibia has lost a singular voice and an irreplaceable presence in its artistic community.

In the same week, the nation also grieves the sudden death of Jackson Kaujeua Junior, son of the late Jackson Kaujeua, another celebrated musician known for his contributions during the liberation struggle and post-independence era. Jackson Kaujeua Junior succumbed to cancer only two days after Ras Sheehama’s passing. Both musicians were deeply authentic, profoundly talented, and unwavering in their commitment to their art, creating music that uplifted the nation’s spirit.

On behalf of the Ministry, we extend our deepest condolences to Ras Sheehama’s widow, Saskia Sheehama, his family, and to Jackson Kaujeua Junior’s relatives. Our sympathies also go out to the wider Namibian nation, which has lost two cultural icons in such a short span. Their powerful songs and enduring legacy will remain forever etched in the hearts of Namibians.

May their souls rest in eternal peace.
