MEXICO CITY, June 13– Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez returned to training on Friday as he steps up his recovery from a hand injury.
Martinez fractured a bone in the ring finger of his right hand while warming up for Aston Villa ahead of the team’s UEFA Europa League final win against Freiburg on May 20. The 33-year-old was tested with a barrage of close-range shots at Argentina’s World Cup training base in Kansas City, raising hopes he will be fit for its opening FIFA World Cup match against Algeria on Tuesday. “We’re doing well, we’re doing well,” Martinez told reporters after the session.
Argentina’s squad is awaiting the arrival of Tottenham’s newly signed center-back Marcos Senesi, who was called up on Thursday to replace Leonardo Balerdi. The defending World Cup champion will also meet Austria and Jordan in Group J of the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
